There are over 600 million girls in the world today, more than 500 million of them in developing countries. They are shaping humanity’s present and future. The opportunities and choices girls have during adolescence will enable them to begin adulthood as empowered, active citizens.

KUALA LUMPUR—There is a pressing need to invest in girls in women, and to ensure their concerns including reproductive and sexual health are fully integrated in the post-2015 development framework, presenters at the Women Deliver 2013 conference (28-30 May) emphasized. Speakers including Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, Executive Director of UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, stressed that family planning initiatives empowering women to manage their fertility are especially important for realizing human rights and sustainable development.

An estimated 2 to 3 million women and girls in developing countries are living with obstetric fistula, a condition that has been virtually eliminated in industrialized nations.
Obstetric fistula is preventable and in most cases treatable, and yet more than 50,000 new cases develop each year.
