Based on the inputs from a regional review organized by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in March 2009, this report reviews the progress achieved after 15 years of implementing the Programme of Action agreed at the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD).
ICPD’s Programme of Action recommended a number of goals to be realized by 2015, and called upon countries and development partners to take specific actions to attain them. Broadly stated, the goals include universal access to comprehensive reproductive health services – such as family planning and sexual health; reduction in infant, child and maternal mortality; universal access to basic education, especially for girls; and gender equality, equity and empowerment of women.
