It has been little more than a week since the death of Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world's longest-reigning monarch with 70 years on the throne.

As Thailand mourns, several regional heads of UN agencies based in Bangkok have visited the Grand Palace to sign the Book of Condolence, including UNFPA's Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, Yoriko Yasukawa.

Her message reads: On behalf of the United Nations Population Fund, our heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family, the government and the people of Thailand on the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, and our sincere admiration for his devotion to the well being of the Thai people, especially the poorest and most disadvantaged. May he rest in peace, and may his spirit of compassion and solidarity live on in Thailand and in the world, always.

UNFPA's Thailand Country Office started its programme of assistance in 1971, working with the Royal Thai Government, non-government organizations, academic institutions and civil society in advancing the goals of the International Conference of Population Development (ICPD), the 2015 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and, now, the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda underpinned by its 17 Sustainable Development Goals - working on improving access to sexual and reproductive health services, addressing challenges such as teen pregnancy and HIV/AIDS, enhancing population data collection, and responding to emerging demographic and population issues including changing family structures and population ageing.

UNFPA's Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific supports the UNFPA Thailand Country Office as well as 22 other UNFPA country and sub-regional offices, working towards a region - and a world - where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person's potential is fulfilled.
