HONIARA, Solomon Islands—In the aftermath of a deadly flood that followed three days of heavy rainfall earlier this month, UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is providing humanitarian support for people displaced by the disaster in this Pacific nation.

The UNFPA Pacific Sub-Regional Office is working with the Solomon Islands Ministry of Health and the Solomon Islands Planned Parenthood Association to organize public health outreach in schools that have become evacuation centres. Adolescent girls and young women in the centres are helping the effort.

At one centre, support including dietary supplements and hygiene supplies has been provided for 25 pregnant and postnatal mothers.

UNFPA has also teamed up with the Ministry of Health's Adolescent Health Department to provide hygiene kits for high school students and teachers at evacuation centres, and conduct discussions on reproductive health-related issues. Issues discussed include gender, reproductive health and disaster dynamics; students are also invited to talk about their own situations.
