The Congress there is debating a bill that would make contraceptives available to people who can't afford them. The Catholic Church opposes the measure. Supporters however say it would save lives and give poor women more options, like the chance to go to school instead of having more babies.

Gender-based violence is a serious problem globally. In Viet Nam, according to the National Study on Domestic Violence against Women, one in three or 34 per cent of ever-married women report that they have suffered physical or sexual violence from their husbands at some time in their lives. The study findings also show that women are three times more likely to be abused by a husband than by any other person.
