Here is a look back at what we did in our region last year, as we sought to advance the Programme of Action stemming from the landmark 1994 International Conference on Population and Development, or ICPD - the revolutionary framework that marked its 25th anniversary in 2019, whose vision of rights and choices for all complements and contributes to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals.

As this video makes abundantly clear, we simply will not achieve the SDGs without achieving ICPD. And we simply cannot address the challenges of COVID-19 across the life-cycle spectrum without pushing all the more to achieve our transformative results.

The incidence of gender-based violence, including domestic violence, has risen sharply around the world amid COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns and other restrictive measures, where women and children are confined all the more in the same space as their abusers.

Indian actor and filmmaker Nandita Das drives home the point in this powerful short film. In just a little over seven minutes, the film illustrates the issue through powerful storytelling - and offers a range of helplines and options for survivors to seek help.

The film was supported by UNESCO, UNFPA, UN Women and UNICEF, along with the Madanjeet Singh Foundation.

Despite many efforts, gender-based violence is still a problem everywhere every day, including Viet Nam and remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations in the world today. It knows no social, economic or national boundaries. One in three women globally has experienced some form of violence, physical or mental, sexual or economic abuse at some points in their lives. Here in Viet Nam, the National Study on Domestic Violence against Women, released by the General Statistics Office, under the coordination of UNFPA in Viet Nam in 2010, showed that 58 per cent of ever-married women had experienced at least one of three forms of violence (physical, mental or sexual) at some point in their lives. Approximately 50% of victims did not tell anyone about the violence they endured, and 87% did not seek help from public services.

Over the past weeks, as economic and social pressures and fear have grown in relation to COVID-19 we have seen a horrifying global surge in domestic violence. Naomi Kitahara, UNFPA Representative in Viet Nam explains how this can be done to address this issue in this in-depth interview with VTC10.

UNFPA, the UN's sexual and reproductive health agency, works in Viet Nam and over 150 other countries globally to achieve zero maternal deaths, zero unmet need for family planning, and zero gender-based violence and other harmful practices against women and girls - a vision enshrined in the Programme of Action stemming from the landmark 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). Iran has been hit hard by COVID-19.

Midwives have been on the frontlines of the response, often at great risk to their own health and safety.

Here is a tribute to three midwives who lost their lives in the service of others.

On the International Day of the Midwife 2020, UNFPA Iran pays tribute to these brave souls, and to midwives everywhere.
