“As we work with communities to build resilience to the effects of climate change, it is crucial that we listen to women and young people, prioritize their needs, and include them in policy making and humanitarian action.”

United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem, with HRH Crown Princess of Denmark, recently visited Fiji and met with communities affected by climate crisis. She also met with midwives saving the lives of mothers and newborns.

Asia-Pacific is the most rapidly ageing region in the world. By 2050, one in four persons will be above the age of 60, the majority of whom will be women. While there is no single comprehensive policy to address population ageing, it is important to ensure that policies are grounded in gender equality and human rights and that they take a life-cycle approach. Investing in each stage of a woman's life from childbirth to childhood to adolescence to adulthood will determine the course of her life path. It is only when we invest in every stage of her life, that she, and society as a whole, can age with good health, economic safety, and dignity.

When she was 15, Rachana Sunar fought off child marriage in rural Nepal - eventually transforming herself into an activist for the rights of women and girls across the spectrum, a true champion of #GenerationEquality.

As the world celebrates the Generation Equality Forum 2021, Rachana recounts her story in this this special video prepared for the regional launch of My Body is My Own - UNFPA's flagship State of World Population Report 2021, the first-ever United Nations report on the theme of bodily autonomy.

Rachana is a longtime partner of UNFPA in Nepal and Asia-Pacific - partnering with us in advocating to end child marriage and all harmful practices against women and girls, one of UNFPA's transformative results.

December 3 marks the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen how challenges long faced by persons with disabilities have been exacerbated in many ways, through gaps in programmes and support services, to stigma and discrimination all the more. This includes a crucial focus on sexual and reproductive health and rights, and a response to gender-based violence.

We have created this first-of-its-kind video at UNFPA, seeking to make the film truly accessible to persons with a range of disabilities, including visual impairment. As such, the video treatment may be new for many viewers. But the more you watch, the more you realise how crucial accessibility - something the majority of us take for granted - is to millions of persons living with disabilities the world over.

We must all do what we can to understand the needs and challenges of persons with disabilities, to foster inclusion and respect, in the spirit of rights and choices for all.

Respect, recognise, engage!

The video was produced in consultation with persons living with disabilities themselves, and created in partnership with Quo-Global, a Bangkok-based production house. We thank all those who provided valuable input, which allowed us to create this product through multiple iterations. We recognise we can do even better going forward, and pledge to do all we can to ensure that our communications content is as accessible as feasible to serve a range of constituencies.

Asia-Pacific is ageing fast.

But as governments in many countries worry about this escalating demographic shift, likening it to a "silver tsunami," there are clear approaches that can be taken to convert challenge into opportunity.

A life-cycle approach, with gender equality at the centre, is crucial.

But what does this mean?

Our new video, launched on the International Day of Older Persons, explains.
